Whiskey Noobsletter: October 2024

Community Updates

I was hoping to have it ready for this newsletter, but we are still a few days away from being able to reveal it… BIG news should be headed your way in the next couple of weeks. Here's what I can disclose now: I have been working on a project for a couple of years now… quietly. It is a new product, made BY whiskey lovers, FOR whiskey lovers (hint: and other wines and spirits enthusiasts, too). I enlisted the help of a good friend so that we could make it PERFECT before releasing, and I think it is ready. Once the paperwork goes through to protect the design patent-wise, we will be ready to go public.

Hints: it makes tastings a whole lot more fun, it will cost you about the same as a mid-shelf bourbon would, and we will also offer a discounted bundle with another very common product within the industry. I apologize if that is vague, but I have to be careful with my words until our paperwork goes through.

Content Updates

I've been putting a lot more thought into the type of content that I want to make. It feels like for a long time I just tried to make “good” content, but I don't think I can really make GREAT content until I get more specific: what styles, themes, etc do I want to communicate?

I have a lot of ideas that you will probably be seeing on Instagram, Tiktok, and Youtube over the course of the next few months, so if you see something new that you enjoy, make sure you let me know with a comment! The first idea that I have is that I really want to be careful not to contribute to doom-scrolling. I already try to keep things as positive and useful as possible (not just spam posting), but I'm working on a new video style to go directly against the short-attention-span culture that these apps are creating. In these videos, I'm going to use very limited editing and pop-ups, less hyper speech and music, and overall try to give everyone's brain a break from their standard feed. My first one will be posting this week, and it’s a review of Lagavulin 16 - let me know what you think, even if it's just to say that it's too boring!

Cocktail Tips:

This is my new favorite tip for an old fashioned: make it a FALL old fashioned by adding a tiny bit of peated scotch! In case you didn’t see my video on this, here is how you do it: make an old fashioned in a separate mixing glass. Grab the glass that you plan to drink out of, and “rinse” it with the scotch. This is usually done by adding a bit of the "rinse” to the glass and turning the glass on its side until all of the sides are coated, then dumping the little extra bit out. If you’d like to make it even easier, you can buy an atomizer and spray the scotch into the glass. Then you add your ice, strain the prepared old fashioned in to the rinsed glass, garnish, and enjoy!

This adds a dimension to the cocktail that I have been LOVING this time of year. You can really smell the peaty smoke when you go to take a sip, but you only get a little bit of it on the palate, so the flavor of the cocktail still comes through full force. 10/10 recommend for my peat lovers!

Just a friendly reminder that I am working on building the Perfect Pairing Club with Adam Guard from Dreamer Cigars! I truly think this club is a great deal, with 52 unique cigars sent out every year, for only 30 bucks a month! We now have a higher tier for double the cigars, too!
